Can The Avengers assemble for less?

Marvel Studios has a pretty big track record for being cheap, and they’re barely a few years old. The saga behind Terrence Howard’s Iron Man 2 ousting is well traveled, and Jon Favreau was almost not hired back to Iron Man 2 as well, despite the “phat moniez” he earned with the first one. As such, it’s not surprising that The Avengers is already showing rumors of budget woes.

According to Bleeding Cool, Marvel Studios is looking to do Avengers seriously on the cheap. As in the first Spider-Man cheap. Spider-Man, in an era where superhero movies weren’t exactly bankable, was made for $139 million. That worked for one street-level superhero, and on a close look, it’s easy to see the places where money was tighter, but it worked. Hopefully, we’ll see more on this in the coming year, with the 2011 shoot date approaching fast as Quicksilver. See what I did there?

Also, Penny Arcade already made the definitive statement on too-cheap superhero movies.
