With her Candyman sequel/revival hotly anticipated for its October 16th release later this year–pandemic willing–director Nia DaCosta is setting sights on another high-profile release, now set to direct Captain Marvel 2 for Disney.
The tentatively-titled Captain Marvel 2 has been pushed back with the rest of Disney’s slate due to the pandemic, so shooting on the sequel is a ways off. But with DaCosta onboard and Candyman hotly anticipated, the production is heating up. It was known previously that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-directed the first film, would not be returning for the follow-up. Since then it’s been speculation and vetting on Disney’s part in finding the right fit, and it sounds as if DaCosta has come out as the clear favorite.
Brie Larson will return as the titular cosmic captain, and with a script by Megan McDonnell (who also wrote on Marvel upcoming WandaVision for Disney+), the kreequel (I’m sorry) is shaping up nicely.
Disney getting DaCosta to direct Captain Marvel 2 continues their trend of promoting filmmakers behind smaller-scale hits to the epic proportions of their comic book chaos. If Candyman ends up even half as good as it looks to be, Captain Marvel 2 could be a real treat.
