It looks like the Captain America films aren’t going away just yet. In a new report from Deadline this evening, the publication has stated that Anthony Mackie, known for his turn as The Falcon in the MCU, will be picking up the mantle as Cap in the upcoming Captain America 4.
If you’re thinking this will be a big-screen continuation of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, you may want to change your expectations. According to the report, it appears as if Mackie will be getting a solo vehicle for Phase 4 or 5 of the MCU. Thankfully, writers Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson from said series will be returning to pen this script, ensuring it continues with the same themes the series covered.
No director has been announced and according to unnamed sources close to Deadline, this isn’t the rumored project that is said to bring Chris Evans back to the MCU. That doesn’t completely rule out any flashbacks or such, but Evans will not be a dominating presence here. That’s great, too, as Mackie deserves a chance to step out from behind the shadow of The Falcon.
Considering Marvel hasn’t confirmed any of these details, we don’t have any idea of when this film will materialize. I believe the MCU is scheduled out to 2023, so Captain America 4 could slot somewhere in between or even after. Whenever it does show up, it’s sure to make a splash much like every other Marvel project.
