This may be my favorite news item of the day. There’s a lot of talk about whether or not the eventual Captain America sequel will be set in modern times (read Glenn’s How to Do It on that subject) or have it set still in World War 2, in the times while Steve was running around kicking Hydra’s butt before getting frozen. I’m all for a modern-day Cap, possibly with flashbacks to WW2, if the story’s somehow relevant to his past experiences. Christopher Markus, co-writer of Captain America: The First Avenger, has maybe the best idea for a villain in the eventual sequel: the oddball villain M.O.D.O.K.. That stands for “Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing.” Yep. He’s like that. Markus also suggests Peter Dinklage, winner of the Best Actor Ever award, as the man to fill M.O.D.O.K.’s weird little head-carrying chariot: “I will win you over to Peter Dinklage as MODOK. If he came around the corner and you saw him floating there you would be terrified. It would be amazing.”
That’s pretty perfect casting, frankly, but it’s difficult for me to see M.O.D.O.K. as a fearful enemy. As you can see from Jenika’s lovely picture, he’s basically a massive head with tiny little arms and legs. He could be pretty easily redesigned into something more fearful, but it’s hard for me to see him as anything but hilariously-campy, especially after the brilliant miniseries M.O.D.O.K.’s 11. Still, I’d LOVE to see Peter Dinklage’s head, grown to ridiculous proportions, with teeny little limbs, floating about and screaming “CURSE YOU CAPTAIN AMERICA!”
