Of little surprise but worthy notation is news that a follow-up to Captain Marvel is currently in its early stages of pre-production, with Marvel Studios bringing new talent aboard the project for the Skrull-sluggin’ sequel.
Megan McDonnell, currently a writer on the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, will write the script for the follow-up, with a director to be determined. Original Captain Marvel co-directors and writers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will not be returning, though it is said their involvement with Marvel productions is not necessarily over, with the possibility of a return for a Disney+ series, or separate film. There’s certainly no shortage of Marvel projects in the works…
Disney is said to be looking for a female filmmaker to helm the sequel. With Cate Shortland behind the camera for the upcoming Black Widow, it seems about time the studio puts more voices in positions of power.
Premiering a bit more than a month before Avengers: Endgame, the MCU’s culmination of some ten years of movies, Captain Marvel was a tremendous success for Disney, surpassing $1 billion at the global box office. You don’t drop a golden goose like that.
As for the sequel, details on Captain Marvel 2‘s plot are minimal, though a shift from the first film’s 1995 setting to the present seem to be confirmed. For more details, stay tuned.
