Groundlings writing duo Jim Rash (best known as Community‘s sexually puzzling dean) and Nat Faxon became surprising Academy Award winners when The Descendants took Best Adapted Screenplay earlier this year. The pair is set to make their directorial debut with upcoming independent The Way, Way Back, which has added Steve Carell and Toni Colette to its cast. Carell and Colette last performed with one another in the acclaimed Little Miss Sunshine in 2006.
The film tells the delightfully indie-sounding story of a teenage boy’s summer vacation, in which he must contend with his “unattentive mother and cheating stepfather,” played by Colette and Carell respectively. Carell will seemingly have some atypical and decidedly un-Michael Scott material to work with, as his character is said to “drink, do drugs and carouse.”
The new arrivals join other notable names attached to the project such as Sam Rockwell and alpine beauty Allison Janney.
