Casting begins for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Steven Spielberg already has an Abraham Lincoln lined up for his true-to-life biopic,

. Daniel Day Lewis has the look, demeanor, and ability to pull off one of the most famous American figures in history, no doubt about it. But an alternative Honest Abe–a vampire hunting Abraham–requires maybe a little less of Day Lewis’s acting perfection, and a lot more fun.

Deadline reports that casting has begun for Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s graphic novel of the same name. This alternative history is set to hit big screens in 2012, possibly going head to head with Spielberg’s biopic. Seeing two completely different interpretations of America’s 16th president in the same year is pretty enticing, so I don’t think either are going to suffer from the temporal proximity. What will make all the difference is who director Bekmambetov and producer Tim Burton find to fill Abe’s shoes and top hat.

Deadline reports that casting has begun for Timur Bekmambetov's Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, based on Seth Grahame-Smith's graphic novel of the same name. Currently, five men are in contention for the role, a healthy mix of established actors and unknowns. To balance out the full resumes of Adrien Brody (The Pianist, Splice) and Josh Lucas (Poseidon), there are the fresh faces of James D’Arcy (Master and Commander), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster) and Benjamin Walker (The War Boys). Brody and Lucas have maturity and several action films to their credit, while D'Arcy has the most experience of the younger contenders. The dilemma for Fox is whether to cast in response to, or complete ignorance of Day-Lewis's perfect casting. The premise is already awesome enough that it doesn't need a big name to draw audiences, so my money is on a younger, possibly crush-worthy version of Lincoln.
