GKids has announced today that it will be releasing a 4K remaster of the landmark anime film The Castle of Cagliostro soon…like, very soon. In fact, if you happen to live in New York City, Los Angeles, or San Francisco, you’ll be able to see this restoration next month. That’s a surprising treat!
For those unaware, The Castle of Cagliostro was the first film directed by legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli fame back in 1979. He not only started his career with a bang but gave us possibly the best rendition of Lupin III ever put to film. It may be a bit dated in some elements, but the movie absolutely holds up in a modern sense.
The limited theatrical run of Cagliostro will begin at the IFC Center in NYC on July 16, 2021. On July 30, both Los Angeles and San Francisco will be playing it at the Landmark Westwood and The Roxie respectively. GKids promises the film will come to other states shortly after, though there aren’t many details as of yet.
If you aren’t able to make one of the theatrical runs, a UHD Blu-Ray of the film with HDR support is available on Amazon. It even has the 2000 re-dub featuring Metal Gear Solid actor David Haytar. I don’t know if this new remaster will be any better, but it will certainly be worth seeing on the big screen.
