Christopher Eccleston, who you may recognize as the ninth Doctor from Doctor Who, has won the role of the villain in Thor: The Dark World, sequel to last summer’s demigod extravaganza Thor. He’ll be playing Malekith the Accursed, ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim and a very formidable foe, from what I’ve gathered.
Eccleston has some big shoes to fill because if there was anything the first Thor did right it was Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. He was a well realized character and a villain the audience could sympathize with, something rare for a comic book bad guy.
I’ve never followed Doctor Who (on my to do list) and have never seen Eccleston in anything else, so I can only speculate as to whether this is good or bad news. Pretty much all of the recent Marvel movies have been excellently cast, so I’d like to think the role is in good hands. I’m open to reassurance.
