I had an incredibly busy weekend, so forgive me for getting this box office round-up out late. It seems most people were not interested in heading to the theaters as the highest-grossing film this weekend, Civil War, only brought in $11.1 million. It had a decline of 56% and was still number one. Ouch.
In second came new release Abigail, which has gotten some solid critical response and stars Melissa Barrera from Scream 6 fame. With $10.2 million domestically and $5 million internationally, the film is off to a decent start but will need to pick up steam in the coming weeks. A reported budget of $28 million isn’t a tough mountain to scale, but one that could wind up sinking projects like this if Abigail doesn’t succeed.
In third place came Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, a film that I’m surprised is still doing this well. It claimed another $9.4 million and nearly outperformed the big newcomer of this weekend. That said, the deadly duo did manage to topple both The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Spy x Family Code: White. The Henry Cavill starring film grossed $9 million for Guy Ritchie while Crunchyroll’s latest anime release bagged $4.8 million. Brutal.
