Jai ho, Bollywood lovers! Yesterday it was announced that the the Bollywood equivalent to the Academy Awards will be making its first ever stop in North America this year in Toronto, Canada. To be honest, this is the first I’ve heard of the ceremony, which has been held at different venues, from London to Dubai, every year since its inaugural presentation in 2000. Regardless, the Indian Academy Awards sound like an awards event done right: it runs over an entire weekend, with performances, screenings, and industry sessions held in addition to the awards ceremony itself.
As I mentioned in my coverage of the Reel Asian Film Festival, Toronto is an extremely diverse city. The South Asian community makes up a large contingent of the population, at about 13%. Given Toronto’s association with the film industry, not only as a hub of Canadian cinema, but as the host of one of the biggest international film festivals in the world, Toronto is an ideal location for the Indian fete. Festival planners expect to attract 40,000 attendants, and up to 600 million viewers worldwide. Well, you know where you’ll find me come June 23rd when the festivities begin!
