According to a source at ShockTillYouDrop, Lionsgate is currently looking to develop a reboot/sequel/prequel (a ReSePre, if you will) of the Cube franchise with Cube 3D. With a hole in their heart left from the Saw series, Lionsgate is looking to replace their old series about a set of seemingly random strangers surviving a series of malicious traps with an even OLDER series about a set of seemingly random strangers surviving a series of malicious traps. Also, did I mention it’s in 3D?
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Cube follows a group of strangers dropped into this bizarre maze and must find their way out of a series of constantly shifting cubed shaped rooms that are filled with booby traps (hehe, I said “booby”) as well as combat their own paranoia/insanity. A product of the Canadian Film Centre and director Vincenzo Natali (who went on to direct Splice), the film would find success abroad and develop a small cult following, further spawning a sequel and a prequel.
The fact that Lionsgate is looking to develop this franchise has me conflicted. On one side, I have this odd fascination with the premise of Cube and would love to see a big budget rendition that would further continue that universe. On the other end, the fact that they’re looking to easily fill the void left by the Saw series with my beloved franchise and make it in 3D no less has me frightened they’ll only further bastardize the film that has already been tarnished by the tepid Cube²: Hypercube and Cube Zero. Either way, hearing this rumor only makes me want to watch the series all over again (which I believe is available on Netflix Instant if you’re interested).
