For those worried that the upcoming Hollywood adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo would tone down the sadism that defines one of the novel’s key themes, star Daniel Craig offered reassuring words in an interview with Esquire magazine.
It’s as adult as you can possibly make it. This is adult drama. I grew up, as we f***ing all did, watching The Godfather and that, movies that were made for adults. And this is a $100 million R-rated movie. Nobody makes those anymore. And Fincher, he’s not holding back. They’ve given him free rein. He showed me some scenes recently, and my hand was over my mouth, going, ‘Are you f***ing serious?’
Craig does go on to hint that perhaps not everything will be directly represented on-screen (“‘There’s more than one way to sense violence,’ he says. ‘Much more powerful ways than seeing it step-by-step.'”), but it sounds as though Fincher and Craig are dedicated to staying true to the harshness of Larsson’s novels, at least within the boundaries of their R-rating.
