Darren Aronofsky still keen to rebuild Robocop

Fresh off directing one of my favourite films of the year and getting ready to jump into the blockbuster ring with The Wolverine, Darren Aronofsky has declared himself interested in MGM’s planned remake of seminal ’80s actioner Robocop.

Nattering to indieWire blog The Playlist, Aronofsky said: “Robocop may still happen one day, who knows? It’s MGM and hopefully they’ll clear their stuff up and I’m still interested. David Self wrote a great script, but the company went under so…”

Aronofsky is already mooted to adapt Machine Man, an online book by Max Barry covering similarly themed material about a man who replaces his body parts with mechanical parts, so it’s a matter of debate as to how seriously his comments should be taken. The Robocop project does look to have been abandoned, but then MGM are edging closer to securing out a deal to pull themselves out of bankruptcy and the property could provide a crucial hit once the studio gets back into action, especially with a director on board who is a big deal in Hollywood right now.

Until he is 100% officially attached to Machine Man, my fingers will be crossed that…

Until he is 100% officially attached to Machine Man, my fingers will be crossed that Aronofsky has the opportunity to take on Robocop instead. I might not have been a fan of all of his work (don't get me started on The Fountain), but his affinity for layering over-the-top plots and visuals with strong thematic undercurrents make him a potentially ideal choice to helm. But frankly, as long as we get more Clarence Boddicker, I won't be complaining too much – check after the jump for a prime cut of Bodd-aciousness.
