David Fincher finalizing deal to direct World War Z 2

According to a report tonight from Variety, David Fincher is close to a deal to direct World War Z 2, the sequel to the 2013 Brad Pitt zombie film loosely adapted from the book by Max Brooks. While Fincher is apparently wary of sequels, Variety says his past working relationship with Pitt has attracted him to the project.

As we noted back in February, Fincher was still interested in directing the World War Z-quel even though the project was up in the air. New Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos is interested in greenlighting the project, though that has not officially happened. Production would likely begin in early 2018.

We’ll let you know more about the project and what direction Fincher hopes to take the series as details arise. Variety previously reported that the deal was closed according to knowledgeable sources, but it looks like the headline has been amended as of this writing to suggest it’s nearing a finalized deal.

This could fall apart faster than a comically large zombie ladder, but for now, WWZII is getting interesting. Fincher’s involvement is like putting a really good farm fresh egg and homemade garlic chili sauce in a lukewarm bowl of 25¢ pork ramen.
