David O. Russell’s Uncharted adaptation is looking to deviate pretty far from its source material. Slashfilm has a quote on the matter form Russell himself, and it seems like the film will have more of a family dynamic slant to it. In a particularly telling quote from an L.A. Times interview, he says:
“This idea really turns me on that there’s a family that’s a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities…[a family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice. We’ll have the family dynamic, which we’ve done in a couple of movies now. And then you take that and put it on the bigger, more muscular stage of an international action picture, but also put all the character stuff in it. That’s a really cool idea to me.”
This not only gels with previous talk we’ve reported on, but it shows a really very interesting film developing here. Russell is keen on turning Drake’s Fortune, which carries a relatively standard, if entertaining, adventure story into something more his speed. The important thing here is how he will merge the family aspect with the big budget, big action that an Uncharted movie needs to have to be truly effective.
