At ATX this weekend Guiellermo Del Toro made fans of his Pacific Rim a little excited as he announced that he’s working on the sequel’s with The Incredible Hulk writer Zak Penn script as if he already had funding for it lined up. He of course does not, but that isn’t stopping him from evidently furthering the story of Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi’s characters from the first film and “going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”
I wasn’t entirely on board with the original, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see more robot on monster action from him. No matter what, Pacific Rim was awesome. As for whether or not it might actually happen, Legendary hasn’t shut the idea down completely and the film reportedly made enough to pass their benchmarks for doing a sequel. We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed.
