By Director Denis Villeneuve is currently in talks to direct a reboot of Dune for Legendary. If he gets on board, this would be the latest in Villeneuve’s sci-fi oeuvre, following this year’s Arrival and next year’s Blade Runner 2049.
The classic 1965 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert has been generally difficult to adapt. David Lynch notably made an interesting mess of a movie in 1984, and John Harrison made a Sci-Fi Channel miniseries of the novel in 2004. (This was before they changed their name to the hip, extreme SyFy.) Cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky worked on Dune prior to Lynch, and while this version of the movie never got made, it led to the pretty delightful documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune.
I have yet to read Dune myself, but I intend to in 2017 because that seems like the thing you’re supposed to do if you’re a nerd. If I enjoy the book, I will likely slam it to the left and shake it to the right.
