While I wasn’t indifferent to the first Detective Pikachu trailer, I was a bit convinced it was going to be a cash grab effort. Getting Ryan Reynolds to play everyone’s favorite rat was a good move, but the film did seem to be a bit generic. The design of the Pokemon was cute, but I didn’t expect much else from the film. Now that I’ve seen the latest trailer, I’m completely on board.
For one, Pikachu basically swears. I know hell isn’t a curse word, but I’m utterly shocked Nintendo is letting their child mascot say naughty things. I also love that a lot of the comedy revolves around traits specific to each Pokemon, which shows the filmmakers clearly have an appreciation for the series this film is set in. This looks like a love letter to fans as much as it does a new installment for beginners.
Why not take a look? It even features Bonnie Tyler’s ridiculous “I Need a Hero,” which should tell you precisely what time of tone the movie is aiming for. Detective Pikachu is set to hit theaters May 10, 2019, and I’ll likely be there day one.
