I am filled with so much joy over this announcement. /Film is reporting that Detroit will finally get its Robocop statue, thanks to the power of crowdfunding! But first, let’s take a look at the history of this project.
A guy on Twitter named @MT proposed the idea of a Robocop statue to the mayor of Detroit, who quickly turned him down. In true Internet fashion, the social media scene was exploding with people sharing the idea, eventually leading to the creation of a Facebook group by John Leonard. Collaborating with friends and people from around the world, and utilizing Kickstarter, Leonard estimated that they would need $50,000 and a place to put the statue. Well, both goals have been met, and exceeded. $57,965, at the time of this writing, has been raised, and the Imagination station has donated an aera for the statue. The biggest contributor though? Omni Consumer Products Corporation, the guys that made actual Stay-Puft marshmallows.
Kickstarter, the fundraising site Leonard used, is such a cool thing. I know a few independent film makers that have used the site to gain funding for their films. Just imagine what could get done if someone pitched an idea that was truly important. Like a Rocketeer statue at Griffith Observatory.
