Here’s some news I wasn’t expecting: Screen Gems is looking to resurrect the long-dead thriller property Urban Legend for the big screen. So that’s, um, cool? Yeah, cool.
The update will be written and directed by Colin Minihan of What Keeps You Alive note and will focus on the digital age. This will reportedly follow college students trying to solve a series of brutal murders resembling “urban legends linked to the darkest corners of social media.” Does that mean a Slender Man? Probably not. But Momo? Momo could be fair game.
I don’t know if I’m a hundred percent up for the idea, but at the very least it’s not like this reboot is going to trash a great series’ legacy. The original Urban Legend (I’ve never seen the sequels) was some very cheesy fluff only memorable for a the microwaved cat and Rebecca Gayheart chewing the absolute hell out of the scenery. Also, Jared Leto’s in it. That’s something.
At it’s worst, anyway, Minihan’s adaptation could only end up as mostly-forgotten as the original.
