Die Antwoord claim Suicide Squad director David Ayer copied their look for Joker & Harley Quinn

While Suicide Squad has broken box office records, the film has issues. Matt pointed out how the problems undermined the good stuff in his review of the film. Suicide Squad clearly wanted to be different things at the same time, which explains why the film seems to have copied the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack.

Intentionally or not, writer/director David Ayer may have also copied Die Antwoord.

Yolani Visser of the South African duo took to Instagram to state her grievances with Ayer, posting a video that includes a definition for out-of-touch old people like me. Watch it below.

Jockin’, huh? I’m going to use that word the next time I go to a discotheque.

There are a lot of similarities in look and maybe even antics, though it seems like Suicide Squad is a major hodgepodge of ideas and styles from different sources. Overt influence may be unavoidable–I mean, isn’t the Die Antwoord aesthetic a little bit Bjork, a little bit Matthew Barney, and a little bit Harmony Korine? Perhaps Ayer meant the Joker & Harley Quinn appearance to be an homage rather than outright jocking. (Did I use the word right, young folks?)

Sadly, Ninja was unavailable for comment.

What do you think? Was Ayer jocking or was he keeping it 100? Should I use young person slang? Is this an homage or do the dynamic duo of Die Antwoord have a point? Maybe Suicide Squad could have had at least one Die Antwoord song on the soundtrack–better than that Skrillex/Rick Ross thing. (On second thought, Die Antwoord is probably on par with that thing.)
