If you saw last year’s Paperman and instantly wished that Disney would get back in the game of 2D animation (and who the hell didn’t), your wish has now been granted. Despite previously deciding that 2D was dead the studio has announced Moana, a new feature length animated film using the CG technology that Paperman used. So while the animation style of the film may be different the animation will definitely not be your traditional CG. iO9 included the image below in their post so that might be a hint as to what it will look like.
The film may take place around 2,000 years ago in the Pacific islands and appears to be another Disney Princess film, but with Frozen being so good there’s no reason to complain about that. The log line reads: “The main character will be Moana Waialiki, a sea voyaging enthusiast, and the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. When her family needs her help, she sets off on an epic journey. The film will also include demi-gods and spirits taken from real mythology.”
Of course Tangled was supposed to be 2D as well and that got completely redone as CGI. 2018 is far away so a lot can change, but for the film sounds incredibly interesting, especially when we note that Aladdin directors John Musker and Ron Clement are in charge.
