Other than the utterly forgettable I Am Number Four, DJ Caruso has made a career out of ripping off Hitchcock and attempting to kill all that’s cool about Garth Ennis’s Preacher. His latest film, just picked up by Sony, is titled Invertigo and, surprisingly, isn’t some sort of high-tech ripoff of Vertigo. The story revolves around a satellite crashing in New York City that makes gravity reverse for some reason. That reason, most likely, is something along the lines of, “OH MAN WOULDN’T IT BE COOL IF CARS WERE ALL FLOATING AROUND THE STATUE OF LIBERTY? THEY’D BE ALL ‘WHOOOM’ ‘VRROOUM.’ GET SHIA ON THE PHONE, AND LET’S SHOOT THIS F**KER.”
In all seriousness, though, the wacky concept here sound a lot more interesting than “North by Northwest, but with an AI” or “Wait, who seriously thinks Shia LaBoeuf is a good replacement for Jimmy Stewart?: The Movie.” I’m hard on Mr. Caruso, but I’ve always got hope that something he’ll do will impress me.
