By That time of year is almost upon New York. I’m talking about DOC NYC, America’s largest documentary/non-fiction film festival. Now in its seventh year, DOC NYC 2016 will run from November 10-17, with screenings taking place at the IFC Center, the SVA Theater, and Cinepolis Chelsea. The schedule and full film lineup are now online to browse.
More than 250 events and films have been scheduled for DOC NYC, including 110 feature-length documentaries. There are 18 world premieres, 19 US premieres, and more than 300 filmmakers and special guests in attendance at the festival this year. The Opening Night Film is Matt Tyrnauer’s Citizen Jane: Battle for the City, and the Closing Night Film is John Scheinfeld’s Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary. One of the notable World Premieres is a sneak peek of the new Netflix docu-series Captive, which centers on hostage situations from the POV of hostage-takers, hostage negotiators, and the hostages themselves.
In addition, the Short List programming at DOC NYC will screen of some of this year’s best docs, including Ava Duvernay’s The 13TH, Ezra Edelman’s O.J.: Made in America, and Josh Kriegman & Elyse Steinberg’s Weiner. Each Short List film will include conversations with the filmmakers.
