Now this is more like it. At the Marvel San Diego Comic-Con panel, it was announced that one of the next Marvel movies featuring characters who were already introduced is going to be a Doctor Strange centric one. It’s not surprising considering his character is one of immense power and connectivity in the universe but it’s nice to see some confirmation.
Titled Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, the movie will see the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange. He will be joined by Elizabeth Olsen, reprising her role as Scarlet Witch. The movie will also see the return of Scott Derickson as the director, which is great as his work on the first Doctor Strange was near perfect for the character.
I really feel like these sophomore and further movies really do the characters a lot more justice since they aren’t tied down by origins and other sticky things. Also since the title says “Multiverse”, do you think we can believe them this time? After the success in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, I think the head honchos are a little less trepidatious in introducing some deeper Marvel concepts like the multiverse to audiences.
Doctor Strange and Multiverse of Madness will release in theaters on May 7, 2021.
