A24 have released a new trailer for Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse, a bottle film (?) about two guys with rough facial hair going crazy. Get ready for “The Frathouse” parodies.
Jests aside, Eggers’ film looks terrific. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe opposite each other as cantankerous watchmen in a salty, rough-and-tumble period story of madness and, perhaps, “enchantment” would seem to simultaneously satisfy the Herman Melville and HP Lovecraft nut within me, and I can’t wait.
Eggers’ film The Witch didn’t leave me as speechless as it did some audiences, but no doubt his attention to period detail, weeding out the rough edges of a past era to create dread and discomfort, is a strength of his filmmaking. With audiences at the Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals singing its praises, I’m hoping The Lighthouse wins me over when it releases October 18th.
