Don’t expect the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie anytime soon

Five Nights At Freddy's

Hey, remember Five Nights at Freddy’s? Back in 2014 the little Indie game that could blitzed social media by storm and became an overnight sensation the likes of which people hadn’t seen at that point in time. Even looking at modern-day Indie game success stories like Among Us or Fall Guys, they haven’t reached the absurd heights that FNAF did. Those franchises also haven’t reached the same heights of intense oversaturation and mediocrity, so let’s just call the reception to FNAF a mixed bag and move on.

Back in 2018, alongside the numerous books, toys, and rapidly produced video games with labyrinthine lore, Blumhouse announced that they had acquired the rights to produce a film based on the series. The game’s creator, Scott Cawthon, would serve as the writer of the film with Gremlins director Chris Columbus signed on board to direct. It was aiming for a 2020 release, but in case you can’t tell, that clearly isn’t happening. In fact, no one knows anything about the movie at all. We don’t even have a trailer. So what’s going on? According to Jason Blum, everything “still active” but he acknowledged that there were problems with the production.

“The story is the big challenge. You know, Five Nights at Freddy’s should have been easier because there are books, there’s a lot of lore and storytelling. For a video game, I think it has more storytelling than almost any other. But still, the story goes down so many rabbit holes. It goes down so many different directions. It’s big. Choosing which part to tell the first time out of the gate — and how to tell it — has been tricky.”

Like Blum said, the story of Five Nights at Freddy’s is absurdly complicated and any attempt to contain all of the varying bits of lore and mystique in a neat 2-hour package is probably going to be close to impossible. In fact, an early draft of the film penned by Cawthon was axed entirely for unknown reasons, but it may have to do with trying to contain as many lore drops and references to the games the overtook the actual plot. This is going to be one of those films where the production is probably going to be more interesting than the film product itself, as most movies based on internet sensations go (COUGHSLENDERMANCOUGH).

We will update you with more information on Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s film as it is made available.
