Back when Dreamworks Animation needed to compete with Disney, they stopped making films in 2D (even if those films are some of the greats) and churned out ten Shreks to a very successful box office performance each time. Basically when Dreamworks found their business getting stale, they took a step back, re-evaluated their practice and came back stronger. With their latest ruckus, Dreamworks Animation has to cut 500 jobs, is greatly reducing the budgets of their projects (such as the upcoming Captain Underpants film), and is limiting themselves to two releases a year.
Here’s their current release schedule:
Kung Fu Panda 3 – March 18, 2016
Trolls – November 4, 2016
Boss Baby – January 13, 2017
The Croods 2 – December 22, 2017
Larrikins – February 16, 2018
How to Train Your Dragon 3 – June 29, 2018
Notable changes include HTTYDT‘s bump to 2018, B.O.O: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations is once again in development hell, and there’s all sorts of odd bumps. I don’t know what Boss Baby is, but I’m not particularly interested. Here’s hoping Dreamworks Animation saves the best for release with this new strategy.
