For those of you don’t know for whatever reason, Dredd did not do well in the box office. It made just over $36.5 million in total from both the international and North American market on a budget of $45 million. While it isn’t a horrible loss, it wasn’t enough to garner a sequel in the eyes of Hollywood. Producer Alex Garland had said back in 2012 that a sequel would happen if the North American market grossed over $50 million. Despite fantastic home video sales, a sequel to Dredd is likely to never happen.
Adi Shankar, the executive producer of Dredd, first broke the news during an AMA on Reddit that he is apparently working on a Dredd short film. When asked if Dredd will have a sequel, he said “Probably not. But I am working on a Dredd short in the vein of #DirtyLaundry … you’re actually the first person to know about this …” #DirtyLaundry is a 2012 short film based on the 2004 Punisher film starring Thomas Jane.
While I’m disappointed for there not to be a sequel, I’m more than excited for a short film like #DirtyLaundry. You can watch the short film here.
