Warner Brothers won the rights to the Ally Carter book adaptation last year, and now the budget ball is finally rolling as Drew Barrymore joins Denise Di Novi (Edward Scissorhands, A Walk to Remember, dozens more in all genres) and Alison Greenspan (New York Minute, Nights in Rodanthe) as a producer for the art heist story, with Shauna Cross (Whip It) responsible for the screenplay. Here’s the plot synopsis from Amazon:
After a childhood spent assisting her father, one of the world’s most talented art thieves, Katarina Bishop tries to leave the family business behind when she forges her way into a New England boarding school. She quickly discovers, though, that her past is inescapable. Her father has been accused of stealing already stolen masterpieces from a dangerous Italian billionaire. Certain that her father is innocent, Kat resolves to find the missing paintings and return them to their unsavory owner, who has given her a two-week deadline. Carter, the author of the Gallagher Girls series, skillfully maintains suspense as Kat assembles a team of teen accomplices, travels across Europe, and plots an impossible art heist to save her dad.
Barrymore has produced eight films in the past, but this is only her second time directing a movie. With Heist Society following her previous film, Whip It, it looks like the lady who was once a poor image of female actors in her youth is now turning into a strong female force in the industry as she continues to pick projects that empower women by putting them in the spotlight of lead roles. Any guesses on which early 20s female will become the main character?
