Contrary to popular belief, Dumb and Dumberer, the prequel to Dumb and Dumber, wasn’t a horrible movie. It wasn’t nearly as good as its forefather, but it made me laugh. However, that movie was made without the involvement of the Farrelly brothers, Peter and Bob, the creators of the first movie (as well as Kingpin, There’s Something About Mary, Shallow Hal, etc.), so it lacked a certain special ingredient. Now there’s a sequel being planned by the Farrelly brothers with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels set to reprise the pivotal roles of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, respectively. Sean Anders and John Morris are heading up the script (Sex Drive) while the Farrelly brothers are going to once again direct.
Currently, the Farrelly brothers are wrapping up production on The Three Stooges movie, which is expected to be an odd mixture of classic tomfoolery and classic, crude Farrelly brothers humor. Putting the stooges’ signature screwball humor in current perspective has the potential to be very funny. Let’s just hope the Farrelly’s can lay off the gross-out humor that seems to be so prevalent in their more recent work. In Hall Pass, for example, there’s a scene that is so cringe-worthy that I had to turn away in shock. If I have to physically look away after seeing the punchline of a scene, you know you’re crossing a line. Hall Pass also wasn’t up to snuff with their earlier work and a revival of the Farrelly’s careers is way overdue.
