I can say with confidence that the majority of the Flixist editors were huge fans of Duncan Jones’ directorial debut, Moon. His sophomore effort, Source Code, wasn’t as amazing as his debut, but it was still one of the better spring releases. Amidst rumors claiming his third film will be an homage to the magnificent Blade Runner, Jones has met with special-effects company Weta Digital (known for their work on the Lord of the Rings series and Avatar) to discuss working on his next film.
As if Jones’ confirmation that his next film is intended to be an homage to the seminal Philip K. Dick adaptation, he indicates via an interview with This is Fake DIY that his next film will possibly be his last science fiction film. Discussing the aforementioned film, Jones had this to say:
I can say that it is a science fiction
film, and potentially… I’ll take a break from sci-fi after this film. Moon was done at a tiny budget and we really squeezed everything we could out of it. Source Code was a chance to work on a bigger budget with name actors, but on a project that wasn’t my own. Hopefully, this third film will be the kind of sci-fi I want to make, on a budget where I can afford to do it as I see it in my head. After that, I’ll change genres.
While it’s a bit unfortunate to see Jones possibly leaving the sci-fi genre, it should prove to be a good challenge to him as a director to indulge in other genres. Of course, we still have the mega third film to look forward to. With a bigger budget, bigger special effects, and almost complete creative control, it could possibly become more than just an homage and become “the next Blade Runner.”
