It’s been nearly four years since news of a Dynasty Warriors live-action film started making the rounds, but it seems the wait is almost over. Chinese video game industry analyst Daniel Ahmad has tweeted out that the adaptation of Koei Tecmo’s long-running series will be released in Hong Kong theaters on April 29, 2021. Directed by Roy Chow (The Great Detective, Knockout), the film will be a retelling of the famous Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel by famous author Luo Guanzhong.

A lot of those actors won’t be familiar to anyone in the west, but the series name will likely turn heads. Most people know what Dynasty Warriors is without having ever played one of the games and that is probably what Koei Tecmo is banking on. Get people hooked with the historical angle and keep them engaged with the mindless action.
It remains to be seen if the film can successfully translate the 1 vs. 1000 battles that the series is known for. Photos from the set show some impressive costumes, but modern Chinese blockbusters tend to be made very cheaply and with an effort on topping Hollywood films. My expectations aren’t too high, but then I also really like Dynasty Warriors. I’m conflicted.
