For the last three years, Edgar Wright has been hosting a film series at the New Beverly Cinema called the Wright Stuff. During a recent screening of Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Wright mentioned he had a new project brewing. “I’ve written a script which is kind of like a musical,” Wright said. “Slightly a departure for me in some ways, but when I’ve told people about the movie and the idea, most of them have said, ‘You’ve got to see Umbrellas of Cherbourg.’ So here we are.”
No other details are available, and Wright will be busy with Ant-Man and the last part of the Cornetto Trilogy with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. But still, it’s an exciting prospect.
This reminds me about last week’s post concerning Charlie Kaufman’s BAFTA lecture on screenwriting. During that video, he mentions that his next directorial effort will be a musical. No word on if Jon Brion will be involved in that, but I hope so. I also hope some other filmmakers make a musical like Woody Allen’s Everyone Says I Love You, Lars Von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark, or Robert Altman’s Popeye.
After the cut, I’ve included a clip from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg in case you haven’t seen it before. I was very much in love with this movie in college, and it’s still a sentimental favorite.
[Via The Playlist]Your bit of useless trivia for the day: Note that gliding shot that starts at 3:10. I recall hearing that Spike Lee was so enamored by that shot when he first saw Cherbourg that he has included some sort of gliding shot in most of his movies. I also recommend checking out Demy’s The Young Girls of Rochefort, which stars Catherine Deneuve and Gene Kelly.
