Earlier this year, we got wind of a Breaking Bad continuation film going into production. Set to explain away the ambiguous and thoughtful ending of the original (because no one can use their imagination anymore), Aaron Paul was slated to return and director Vince Gilligan was even penning the script. This was authentic a sequel as one could ask for.
I just don’t feel it, though. Despite being a phenomenal show, most of season five felt like padding so that AMC could keep its highly acclaimed show on the air. There are episodes that retread ground and make logical leaps to contrive situations where characters will die. For a show that did so well with setup, payoff, and introspective character arcs, it just kind of fell apart at the end (except for the absolutely stellar “Ozymandias”). Now we can’t even keep the original ending that lent itself to personal interpretation.
Anyway, this teaser sees Jesse Pinkman’s friend Skinny Pete brought in for questioning on the whereabouts of Walter’s protege. There’s a speech about how Jesse was locked in a cage like an animal and that Pete isn’t willing to send him to another one. It’s fairly intense and seems to keep the same style of the original series. I’m just not sure I care to see more Breaking Bad.
Regardless, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie will begin airing on Netflix starting October 11, 2019.
