Behold the all mighty power of The Hunger Games. After dominating box offices, breaking records and curing cancer it has now shown its power to delay other films. In this case it is Summit Entertainment’s Ender’s Game, which was originally scheduled to release in March of 2013 during the lucrative Easter corridor. The film will now land on November 1, 2013.
Summit, whose parent company is Lionsgate, is doing this to capitalize off of Catching Fire, the upcoming sequel to The Hunger Games, which is scheduled to land three weeks after Ender’s Game‘s new release date. Lionsgate belives this will give them the opportunity to push Ender’s Game with Catching Fire. Both films are science-fiction and based off of novels involving children taking part in violent “games” so the connection is definitely there.
It’s probably a smart move as Orson Scott Card’s science-fiction classic doesn’t have the recency of The Hunger Games and thus doesn’t have the rabid fan base of that franchise. We’ll have to wait and see if it pays off.
