By The DCEU is pretty much at a standstill. Sure, we’ve got Aquaman coming out, but with Cavill’s Superman up in the air, Shazam! seeming to play mostly on its own, Batman development focussing on his early years, and Wonder Woman 1984 being set in 1984, the steady march towards universe building feels very disparate. Now we’ve got one more hiccup: The Flash is being delayed since Ezra Miller is tied up shooting Fantastic Beasts films for the next year.
Delays because of actor conflicts aren’t that uncommon, but there’s two key factors here. One, this delay is occurring because The Flash is already behind. Miller was supposed to be free for it, but DC’s hemming and hawing over what to do with the movie meant the conflict arose since they still do not have a screenplay ready. The second is a clear statement on the power of these two franchises. Harry Potter trumps all… as do filming contracts and schedules for actors, of course.
The movie should now start shooting in late 2019, instead of the assumed start date of March, and probably won’t release until 2021, with new directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein at the helm — unless they get fired too. Honestly, I’m not sure this is a bad thing. DC is trying to soft reboot their universe and I’d be fine with a little more distance between The Flash in Justice League and whatever the new take will be once his movie finally rolls around.
