Fast X dominates a pretty vacant box office this weekend

0

Honestly, I nearly forgot about doing the box office roundup for this past weekend. Maybe with the recent release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, people stayed away from theaters since they were glued to their Switch consoles. I’m not sure, but I saw almost no significant outlets covering the box office and assumed everything just bombed. Surprisingly, Fast X opened to an okay domestic release with $67.5 million.

Internationally speaking, Fast X did much better. Somehow, the 10th (though technically 11th) Fast and the Furious film pulled $251.4 million overseas. In China, specifically, the film saw even bigger returns than in the US and managed a $78.3 million opener. With a reported budget of around $340 million, the film is already on track to make its money back. Whether or not this first part of a potential trilogy closer will become profitable is still up in the air.

As for the other films, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 took second place with a solid third-week haul of $31.9 million. That’s only 48% down from the previous week and it propels the film’s domestic gross to $266.5 million. If I’m not mistaken, it is the second highest-grossing film of the year behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Speaking of Mario and Luigi, they took third with an extra $9.8 million and brought the domestic gross to $549 million. Internationally, the film sits at $1.2 billion, which is just ludicrous.

Here are the top 10 films for the past weekend (all totals domestic):

  1. Fast X – $67.5 million
  2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – $31.9 million
  3. The Super Mario Bros. Movie – $9.8 million
  4. Book Club: The Next Chapter – $3 million
  5. Evil Dead Rise – $2.3 million
  6. John Wick: Chapter 4 – $1.3 million
  7. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret – $1.3 million
  8. Hypnotic – $825,000
  9. Love Again – $400,000
  10. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – $385,000
