By Okay okay, I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that Pixar should focus on original content rather than sequelize (and thus trivialize) their exiting properties. But it’s not always a bad thing. A while ago I defended Toy Story 4, and I’m going to do the same here. When the sequel was first announced I was skeptical. I wanted an Incredibles sequel more than another Finding Nemo (I even joked about the sequel focusing on Dory’s Alzheimer’s disease), and then it slowly came together.
Albert Brooks signed on (with Stanton getting more live action work), Ellen DeGeneres returned, and now everything looks great. We even have a bit of plot now. Finding Dory will take place a year after the original, set along the California coast, and will apparently involve fish important to Dory’s life. I’m all about establishing character, so I’m game for this. And I’m a firm believer that if Pixar believes strongly enough that they could find and make a good story, they should. Besides, there’s a precedent set that establishes Pixar as a company willing to bow out of a terrible project when necessary.
Regardless of whether or not you want it, Finding Dory will hit shores November 25, 2015, the year Disney will rule the world.
