Thor: Ragnarok has long be toted as a bit of a tonal shit for the franchise, and to really emphasize this it appears that Thor himself is getting a new look. The long, luxurious, flowing blonde locks of Chris Hemsworth’s make up are gone and Thor now sports a much shorter gladiatorial look. It goes along with what is a new outfit as well.
This all makes sense since the film is about Thor and the Hulk being tossed onto the alien planet of Sakaar, where they are forced into gladiatorial combat. Yes, that means they’ll be fighting one another again.
EW also revealed how Cate Blanchett’s villain Hela will look, which at the moment is green with some attitude. The vamping on the cover along with the weird font and color choices (and the 80s-tastic title card above) definitely make this one feel a lot more campy, but maybe that’s what the franchise needs. It’s first two installments were decent, but playing into the fact that this is a Norse god with a magical hammer a bit more couldn’t hurt.
Director Taika Waititi Confirms says not to worry. They aren’t going to far:
“I think sometimes people mistake a tonal shift as ‘We’re just going to make some ridiculous broad comedy where no one gives a s— what happens and everyone gets stoned and sits around talking about saving the universe.’ We want people to care what happens and care that the hero succeeds. I think tonally it’s like a slight shift. I don’t feel nervous — I feel good about it.”
