While we were all focused on Star Wars: The Force Awakens last year, Bad Robot was quietly putting together the next film in the Cloverfield series. Somewhat related to 2008’s Cloverfield, this project (which was most likely formerly titled Valencia as director Dan Trachtenberg is attached) stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as someone who gets into a car accident and wakes up in John Goodman’s shelter as he tells her the world has ended.
When this trailer debuted last night (attached to Bay’s 13 Hours), folks went wild with speculation (thanks to how well this trailer’s been cut as its mysterious nature is reminiscent of Cloverfield‘s first striking trailer) but J.J Abrams cleared the air naming it a sort of “blood relative.” No one knows why the title was changed, but the purveying theory is that Bad Robot plans to use the “Cloverfield” title to support an anthology of thriller and science fiction ideas. All of that sounds fantastic.
But you know what’s better? 10 Cloverfield Lane releases March 11th. Holy sh*t did they pull the wool over our eyes. It’s unreal how anyone’s managed to hide a project in this day and age. Our Editor-in-Chief jokingly suggested Abrams signed on for Force Awakens just to get another Cloverfield out there. Maybe he’s right, haha.
