Bridge of Spies is directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Joel and Ethan Coen (and Matt Charman) and it stars Tom Hanks. Names most everyone knows and respects to a certain degree, which means it is automatically positioned to succeed in one way or another.
It has become sport to dislike Spielberg in recent years, and albeit I’m not a huge fan of the man, I always find myself excited for his next movies. Sadly, this is not the case with Bridge of Spies, having seen the trailer.
Sure, it looks exciting as a spy-thriller, and important as a character study about morality and choice, but it also looks indescribably conventional in my eyes. Maybe I’ve turned a cynic post-Lincoln – which I really didn’t like – but I think Spielberg has a lot more to offer than is displayed here.
