If there is one thing the Coen brothers knock out of the park (and there are many things they knock out of the park), it’s westerns. No Country for Old Men and True Grit are some of the best films the genre has to offer. Hell, even their not-westerns are a little bit western, and when they do go full western you know you’re in for something special. That’s why it’s hard not to get super excited for their upcoming Netflix film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which the first trailer for just landed.
This looks like one of the most Coen-feeling films they’ve done. It’s got that weird, hilarious comic edge to it while playing through their love of westerns. The movie, which was originally pitched as a six-part anthology TV series, is a six-part anthology film. You can see some of the tonal and visual shifts between stories in the trailer itself, but it’ll be interesting to see how they all tie together thematically as a whole. Early reviews have been mixed, but early reviews of Coen films are almost always mixed.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will open in limited theaters and on Netflix on November 16, 2018.
