After the travesty of the “original” Suicide Squad, I wasn’t sure I could stomach anything remotely related. Turns out, the new trailer for James Gunn’s rebooted roster might turn out to be just what the doctor ordered, with a (mostly) fresh cast of sardonic faces and what might be a tighter direction, The Suicide Squad is looking to start over by blowing it all up. And then probably blowing it up again.
Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) is back heading up the titular team of terrible tights-wearers, with Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) back along for the ride. Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) oversees the operation with a bureaucratic drawl, and the likes of Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Peacemaker (John Cena) lock and load for more fun on the fringes of the law. Really though, we should all be blessed by the inclusion of Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) for his commitment to fashion, and the team’s token CG-sea creature King Shark. Yep, it’s Sylvester Stallone.
The new trailer features the Squad in full form, embarking on a dangerous mission as they’re dropped on the remote island of Corto Maltese, the home to droves of faceless, nameless paramilitary goons to serve as glorious target practice for whatever carnage the team might dish out. All in good fun.
With James Gunn directing fans of superheroes at large are likely eager to see what the man behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films can do for the DC property. He seems to have a knack for oddball teams fueled by classic rock and crude banter, so maybe this will be the real deal? Warner Bros. certainly have some confidence in the new branding, with a Peacemaker spin-off already in the pipeline. All chips in.
The gamble will turn out one way or the other soon, with an HBO Max and theatrical release for The Suicide Squad coming August 6th this year.
