Me and Earl and the Dying Girl won the grand jury prize and the audience award for best U.S. drama at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and with only three months until its July 1 premiere, a trailer has been released.
Based on the 2012 novel by the same name, we are introduced to “me” (Thomas Mann), Earl (RJ Cyler) and the dying girl (Olivia Cooke), as they form an unexpected bond when “me” is forced to spent time with the dying girl, in an attempt to make her feel better.
While this trailer, like most others these days, reveal too much, it’s easy to see why it became such a hit at Sundance. It feels like a distant cousin to all the cheesy impossible love stories of recent years, but maybe without all the clichés usually crossed off a list when making such a movie. If nothing else, it could be fun to see all their movie parodies.
