Tom Cruise debuted the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick at the San Diego Comic Con yesterday. The sequel comes 34 years after the original, and looks extremely Top Gun-y: there’s planes, there’s oily sports on the beach, there’s a motorcycle, and there are a bunch of naval officers singing some song at a bar. (Fun fact: the bar where they shot the “Great Balls of Fire” scene in the first film is literally across the street from Comic Con.)
The story of the film apparently centers on Maverick, now a Top Gun flight instructor, teaching Goose’s son how to be a pilot.
I have very little attachment to the first Top Gun, so I’m not really anticipating the sequel. However, the flight scenes in the trailer are pretty spectacular, building off the aerial derring-do Cruise displayed in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Since civilians aren’t allowed to fly fighter jets, I assume the cockpit shots here are Cruise riding shotgun in a fighter jet rigged to look like he’s the pilot.
