Gumdrop is the charming product of writer/co-director Kerry Conran (Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) and Stephen Lawes (visual effects director for Avatar and The Avengers). With those powerhouse names behind it, it’s no surprise that Gumdrop turns out as good as it does. The short film takes place during Gumdrop’s, the robot actress, audition for a role with a mysterious “Tik-Tok” (which is, sadly, not a reference to Ke$ha).
Gumdrop the Robot is full of an effervescent personality that’s surprisingly endearing. “Her” personality takes her well beyond machine and personifies her in the best way. Also, there are two scenes that made me go “Daaaawwww!” I bet you can guess which ones. Although now that I think about it, she sort of reminds me of Rocky 4 for some reason.
