On the ReelEastHK YouTube channel, Bey Logan has shared this alternate cut of the Jet Li/Donnie Yen fight from Zhang Yimou’s Hero. Their battle is staged differently and framed differently, which alters they way the scene plays out. There are even different bits of choreography used that weren’t in the final film.
Logan is a well-respected enthusiast of Asian movies, particularly from Hong Kong. I still have a copy of his book Hong Kong Action Cinema, which I picked up 15 years ago when I was starting to really get into Hong Kong movies beyond Jackie Chan.
I’ve included the original Jet Li vs. Donnie Yen fight from Hero after the cut so you can compare the scenes. The clip below doesn’t have the four-on-one lead-in fight, but I’m pretty sure the alternate cut of that fight is staged differently as well.
