By Mamá by Andres Muschietti is a taut and frightening Spanish short from 2008 that just hits good and hard. It does most of its work in just a single uninterrupted shot.
The short film made an impression on Guillermo del Toro, who helped shepherd and produce a feature film version of Mamá starring Jessica Chastain. It marks Muschietti’s feature film debut. Muschietti co-wrote screenplay for the feature film with his sister Barbara and novelist/television writer Neil Cross. Originally slated for an October 2012 release, the full-length Mama will now be out in theaters on January 18th, 2013.
